Breast Augmentation: Put Your Fat to Work

Breast Augmentation: Put Your Fat to Work

We’re accustomed to women calling Form and Face to learn about breast augmentation. After all, breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed aesthetic surgeries in the world. Our founder Dr Benjamin Norris is a talented and experienced surgeon who has helped thousands of women sculpt their breasts and bodies.

We’ve noticed a growing interest lately in what some consider a more natural approach to changing their contours. It’s easy to see why. Providers of fat grafting for breast augmentation promise:

  • A more natural procedure using your own tissue instead of a saline or silicone implant
  • Fat can be harvested from an area where you don’t want it
  • Fat-graft-reconstructed breasts retain sensation and are naturally soft

Our patients want facts, not promises about fat transfer breast enlargement. We thought you might, too. In this article, we ask and answer our patient’s most frequently asked questions about this innovative, but controversial procedure.

Top 5 Questions about Fat Transfer for Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer breast enlargement goes by many names, including the medical term “autologous breast augmentation” and the popular phrase “natural breast enlargement”. Regardless of what they call it, most patients want to know:

What is the advantage of a fat transfer for breast augmentation?
Advocates of this procedure consider it a practical alternative for women who want larger, sculpted breasts, but want to avoid saline or silicone implants.

Does natural breast enlargement have a track record of success?
According to an article published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, “Autologous fat grafting is increasingly used in cosmetic surgery. However, its efficacy and safety are still ambiguous.”

What happens during fat transfer breast augmentation?
Patients who choose this procedure will undergo two surgical procedures in a single day. First, the fat is harvested from an appropriate donor site such as the thighs, buttocks, or waist. After it has been cleaned and processed, the fat is injected where volume in the breast is desired.

Does fat transfer breast augmentation cause scarring?

No incisions are made to the breast using this technique. Instead, a small needle creates “ports” for the fat. These ports heal over time, usually with little to no scarring. Scars can occur at the fat harvest site, though a skilled surgeon will work to ensure that they are well hidden and no longer than a few millimetres.

Do I have to do anything special after the procedure?
It will take up to two weeks for the living cells in the fat transfer to become fully integrated into the existing breast tissue. For that period, you will need to avoid wearing a bra or compression garment and avoid sleeping or your stomach. You will also need to refrain from any activity that puts strain on your breasts.
