Round One: Can Implants Take a Hit?

Round One: Can Implants Take a Hit?

“During an augmentation surgery consultation, it’s extremely common for patients at Form and Face to ask about the durability of their breast implants,” reports Dr Benjamin Norris. “I’m happy to give them the reassuring facts.” Too bad Dr Norris wasn’t on hand when an Ultimate Fighting Champion was denied the right to compete because of her breast implants.

Here’s the story…

Ultimate Fighter for Breast Implants

In early April, Pearl Gonzalez was temporarily barred from competing in UFC 210, a mixed martial arts competition in America. She had run afoul of a rule of the New York State Athletic Commission, which reads in part, “Due to concern over rupture, boxers who have breast implants are not eligible to box in New York.”

Gonzalez appealed the decision. After she provided medical documents and access to her physician, Gonzalez was cleared to compete. She was eager for fans to know that she is more than just her bosom. “I’m going to win tomorrow night, and I’m going to show the world that not only do I have breast implants, but I am a talented fighter,” she said.

Unfortunately she (and her breast implants) took a beating the next day. “It may have been a loss for Gonzalez, but it was definitely a win for breast implants, “says Dr Norris. “The fight demonstrates just how tough implants are.”

Breast Implants Are Stronger than You Think

The TGA has approved certain varieties of both saline and silicone filled implants for use in Australia. Both types of implants go through rigorous testing precisely so that they do not rupture. They are designed to

  • Withstand changes in altitude
  • Stand up to trauma
  • Withstand the pressure of a mammogram
  • Be twisted and pulled during development

Research puts the risk of a saline implant failure at about 10% in ten years. By 15 years, however, the risk rate jumps dramatically to 50%. In contrast, silicone gel implants rate of failure is about 5% at ten years. Long term studies of silicone gel implants have not yet been completed.

The Better Health Channel website says, “If you plan on breast augmentation (boob job) surgery, you should try to find out as much as you can before you make a decision to have breast implants.” We agree whole-heartedly.
