It’s only normal to experience both nerves and an eager sense of anticipation when planning your breast procedure. During a series of slow-paced consultations, Dr Norris will take the time to discuss any concerns you may have and will endeavour to customise your breast lift (mastopexy) or breast augmentation (mammoplasty) according to your needs and desired results.
A breast lift, otherwise known as a mastopexy, is performed to raise, firm and reshape breasts. The procedure involves removing excess skin to tighten the surrounding tissue and to reshape and support the new breast shape.
For women whose nipples point down or sit below the inframammary fold, known as breast ptosis, a mastopexy can raise the position of the nipples.
The internal breast tissue can also be reshaped during a breast lift mastopexy. Some women find that their areolas (the darker skin around the nipples) become enlarged over time, and a the surgery can address this also.
Breast augmentation, otherwise known as augmentation mammoplasty, can be performed as both a cosmetic procedure and a reconstructive procedure, following a mastectomy or trauma.
During a breast augmentation mammoplasty, implants - typically silicone - are inserted either beneath or above the breast muscle. The goal of this procedure is to increase the size of the breasts, which may be desired following pregnancy or weight loss.
As time goes by, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, gravity and the normal ageing process can all have an effect on the shape, size, and position of a woman’s breasts. Often, these factors may cause changes in shape, loss of volume, or loss of elasticity in the skin.
Unfortunately, a breast lift mastopexy alone cannot enhance breast size or replace lost volume, and a breast augmentation mammoplasty cannot correct severe breast ptosis. For this reason, both an augmentation mammoplasty (implants) and a mastopexy (lift) can be performed in conjunction. This can be an option for patients who desire to address both breast laxity and volume in a single procedure.
If combining a breast lift with breast implants (mastopexy with augmentation mammoplasty), you may have the procedure in a one-stage or two-stage process, depending on what is recommended for you. In a one-stage process, both procedures are done at the same time. In a two-stage process, the breast lift mastopexy is performed as a separate procedure first, before the breast augmentation mammoplasty is done at a later stage.
The specific details of your breast augmentation mammoplasty or mastopexy procedure will be determined during your consultation, as different incision types can be used, and, in the case of mammoplasty, various breast implant types are available.
In the case of mastopexy, an incision type will be chosen to address your individual needs:
For your breast augmentation mammoplasty, different material types, shapes, textures, sizes, and placement choices are available when selecting breast implants:
There are pros and cons to each of these choices, and decisions will come down to the desired results that you would like to achieve, as well what will complement your individual features. Note that results are not the same for everyone, and there are always risks involved in breast procedures. Make sure to discuss your options and the risks involved before you proceed with your augmentation mammoplasty or mastopexy.
