You Can’t Fix What You Can’t Find

Forty-four Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer each day. Despite that fact, research by HCF and the National Breast Cancer Foundation found that while 92% of women understand the importance of regular breast checks:

44% have never visited a doctor for a breast check
44% don’t know what to look for during a self-exam
42% don’t know what they should feel during a breast exam

To date, mammograms are considered the gold standard for detecting women’s breast health problems. Unfortunately, for women with implants they also present certain risks. Additionally, implants affect how much of the breast tissue can be seen in an x-ray, making cancer detection more difficult.

A study by the FDA in America found that implants can

Delayed breast cancer detection
Prevented mammograms from being performed due to capsular contracture
Prevented mammograms from being performed due to fear that an implant would rupture

However, with the correct imaging equipment and a radiologist that knows you have breast implants, they do not impact on cancer detection at any stage.

Breast Implants Can’t Fool Your Hands

The two best weapons every woman has in her arsenal against breast disease are her hands and her brain. It’s important to be diligent about breast self-examinations. When you have a baseline of knowledge of the look and feel of your breasts, you’re more likely to detect any anomalies. Interestingly, breast implants can even make it easier to stay healthy. The implants push breast tissue forward, making it less challenging to detect masses and suspicious lesions.
