Lipo vs CoolSculpting: It’s Your Choice, But…

Lipo vs CoolSculpting: It’s Your Choice, But…

The receptionist at our practice has been fielding a lot of calls asking whether Dr Norris does CoolSculpting. We’re not surprised by the enquiries. CoolSculpting is all over the news with proponents saying it can minimise muffin tops, combat fat that won’t respond to diet and exercise, and help people lose those their love-handles without surgery.

In other words, CoolSculpting is the new kid on the body-contouring block. It’s purported to be less invasive, less risky, and less costly than liposuction…but is it better? We explore the pros and cons of each procedure below.

What Is Liposuction?

In many ways, comparing liposuction and CoolSculpting is like comparing apples and oranges. Liposuction is a surgical procedure with an outstanding safety record. Risks of complications can be further minimised when performed by a specially trained and experienced surgeon like Dr Norris.

During liposuction, patients are under anaesthesia, either local or general. The surgeon makes small incisions in the treatment area and then uses an instrument known as a cannula to remove excess fat. The fat cells are removed permanently. Bruising, swelling, and soreness is to be expected. Most patients are able to return to work within a day or two and normal activities within two weeks.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting uses freezing temperatures to reduce fat. A transparent gel pad is placed over the treatment area to protect the skin. A specialised applicator pulls the fat bulge into a cup where cooling panels freeze the fat. This first part of the treatment takes approximately an hour. Next, the practitioner massages the frozen mound to break up even more fat cells. It takes time for the body to absorb the dead, frozen cells. Therefore results may not be visible for two to three months.

Though less expensive than liposuction, CoolSculpting does not come cheap. Additionally, it cannot treat large areas of excess fat and multiple treatments may be necessary. Though downtime is minimal, you are likely to be sore for days or even weeks after the treatment.

Dr Norris Explains 5 Advantages of Liposuction

Liposuction is the world’s most popular cosmetic procedure and is the only body sculpting procedure we offer. Dr Norris says that unlike CoolSculpting, liposuction

  1. Delivers a more aggressive and complete fat reduction
  2. Allows for better contouring
  3. Offers more immediate results
  4. Can be combined with other skin-tightening techniques
  5. Can be performed at the same time as other procedures
