Over the past year, Form and Face has welcomed all kinds of new patients to our practice in Bondi Junction, many of them in their twenties. They’re part of a growing trend among millennials to undergo treatments with neuromodulators to keep wrinkles from setting in. The trend was summed by 27-year old Rebecca Toles in an interview for the Canadian Broadcasting Company:
“If by the time I’m 50, I can have just reduced some of the key areas so I have, you know, a few nice laugh lines, as opposed to a nice deep-set wrinkle between my eyebrows, that’s what I’m going for.”
Can anti-wrinkle injections truly keep wrinkles from forming? Yes. “Dynamic wrinkles appear when you smile, frown, or raise your eyebrows,” explains Dr Norris. “When skin is taut, these wrinkles disappear after your stop making a facial expression.” Over time however, skin loses its elasticity. When that happens, dynamic wrinkles become static wrinkles, visible even when your face isn’t moving. Neuromodulators prevent muscles from forming dynamic wrinkles to start with, making it impossible for them to progress to static wrinkles.
Identical Twins & Anti-Wrinkle Injection Research
In the world of cosmetic enhancement, seeing is believing. That’s why Form and Face proudly share our before and after pictures to prospective patients. We’re eager for them to see the outstanding results our treatments provide. It’s also the reason that the makers of a popular anti-wrinkle injection undertook a 13-year study to examine the results their product delivered. Their subjects: identical twin sisters.
Over the course of the study, Twin #1 received injections in her forehead, her glabella region and her crow’s feet, two to three times per year. Twin #2 was injected only twice, three and seven years into the study. When the study was concluded researchers found that:
- Imprinted forehead and glabella lines were not evident in Twin #1, but were in Twin #2.
- Crow’s feet were less noticeable when Twin #1 smiled than Twin #2.
- Untreated facial areas such as nasolabial folds aged comparably in both twins.
- Neither patients experienced adverse effects.
Do’s and Don’ts for Anti-Wrinkle Injections
The increased demand for anti-ageing injections has given rise to a black-market of practitioners, including “injection parties.” They often have no medical credentials and provide their services in hotel rooms. Often the injectable they use is of an inferior grade, which allows them to offer their super-low prices. The results can be disastrous, and sometimes deadly. “Saving money is meaningless if you end up disfigured,” warns Dr Norris. “It’s critical to know your provider and have trust in his/her skills and ethics.”
