Wrinkle Treatments Sydney
- A 30 to 45-minute procedure, depending on the patient’s concerns
- Results can last 3-4 months
Wrinkle treatments have been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia since 2002, but they have been used for various medical conditions (twitches, tics, and spasms) since 1989.
These treatments in our Sydney Clinic inhibit the contractions of muscles responsible for creating fine lines and wrinkles.
At Form & Face Sydney Clinic, our Aesthetic Nurses have performed wrinkle treatments in Australia since 1992. They work very closely with our Specialist Plastic Surgeon, Dr Ben Norris.
How do wrinkle treatments work?
A substance is administered into the muscle that is responsible for the contractions. Wrinkle treatments block the chemical messenger acetylcholine, which prevents the transmission of signals to the muscle. As a result, the muscular contractions stop or are minimised. This reduces the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles on the surface of your skin. It can also be used to prevent the formation of deeper wrinkles.
Is the treatment painful?
Before the treatment, a numbing cream is applied to the target area to minimise discomfort. However, the process will produce a pinching or stinging sensation.
The outcomes shown are only relevant for this patient and do not necessarily reflect the results other patients may experience. Results may vary due to many factors, including the individual’s genetics and lifestyle.

Patient 4 – Muscle relaxant to the mouth
Are there any differences between wrinkle treatments and facial contouring treatments?
Wrinkle treatments contain a substance that relaxes the muscles by preventing the transmission of signals responsible for creating muscular contractions. Once these contractions are gone, wrinkle visibility is reduced.
In contrast, facial contouring treatments contain a gel-like substance found naturally in your skin. During the treatment, this substance adds volume and/or fullness to the treatment area. It also provides hydration to your skin.
Wrinkle treatments and facial contouring treatments can be used together.
Other non-cosmetic uses of wrinkle treatments include:
- Migraine headaches
- Teeth clenching or grinding
- T.M.J (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder)
- Excessive sweating to the scalp, forehead and underarms (Hyperhidrosis)
Who is a suitable candidate for the treatment?
Anyone seeking the treatment should have good physical and mental health, realistic expectations, and a positive outlook. Allergies, skin infections, muscle or nerve conditions, or undiagnosed medical conditions are contraindications to the treatment. In addition, patients cannot be treated while pregnant, breastfeeding, or undergoing IVF treatments.
How will I care for the treated area?
- Stay in an upright position for the first 4 hours after the treatment.
- Avoid vigorous washing, massaging, or rubbing the treated area/s for 12 hours.
- Avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours.
How long will the results last?
The results vary from patient to patient. This will depend on several factors like the strength of the muscles to be treated and the dosage needed to provide the desired result.
- Wrinkle treatments take 2-3 days to exert their effect on the underlying muscle. The effects are gradually seen each day.
- Full results are seen in 10-14 days, so be patient.
- Maintenance treatments are required at 3-4 months.
- Excessive exercise, extreme pain, stress, social drug use, and medication that speed up the metabolism may reduce results.
Are there any side effects associated with the treatment?
Side effects include the following:
- Bruising is rare and often gone in 5-7 days (makeup usually conceals it).
- Inflammation, redness, and swelling
- Small lumps at treatment site – rare but resolve within 24 hours.
- Headaches – usually occur on the first day or so and are relieved with Panadol.
- Asymmetry

What Causes Wrinkles
Wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process. They arise from various internal and external factors. Internally, they are primarily caused by the gradual loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, which give our skin flexibility and strength. Our skin becomes thinner and less resilient as we age, forming lines and creases. Additionally, genetic factors play a significant role in how our skin ages, influencing the likelihood and pattern of wrinkle development.
Externally, environmental factors significantly contribute to the acceleration of wrinkle formation. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun degrades collagen and elastin more rapidly, while habits such as smoking can further exacerbate this process. Even repeated facial expressions can leave their mark over time as the skin loses its ability to bounce back. Understanding these causes is crucial in identifying the most effective treatment of wrinkles.
At Form And Face, our educational consultations are designed to explore the multifaceted causes of wrinkles, enabling us to tailor the most suitable treatment plans and lifestyle recommendations to diminish their impact. Our goal is to empower you with knowledge and strategies for proactive skin care, encompassing both preventative practices and targeted treatments.
Reasons Why Some Patients Decide to Treat Wrinkles
The decision to seek treatment for wrinkles is highly personal and influenced by various factors. Wrinkles, as a natural part of ageing, can affect individuals differently. In most cases, patients choose wrinkle treatments in Sydney to reduce the appearance of signs of ageing.
At Form And Face, we understand that the motivation behind seeking wrinkle treatment is as unique as the individuals we see. Our role is to support your decision-making process with comprehensive information, ensuring that any choice is informed and aligned with your values and lifestyle.
