Understanding Excessive Sweating: More Than a Comfort Issue

Excessive sweating can significantly challenge daily life, making it difficult to remain dry and free from odour. Individuals facing this issue may frequently change clothes and opt for materials that better conceal sweat breakthroughs. Moreover, the condition can intensify body odour. However, it’s crucial to recognise that excessive sweating isn’t just a matter of discomfort or aesthetics—it could also signal underlying health concerns such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or infections.

At Form & Face Clinic, treating excessive sweating isn’t solely about addressing the related discomfort; we also prioritise identifying any potential medical causes behind the condition.

Why does excessive sweating occur?

Your body’s sympathetic nervous system uses sweat like a thermostat. When your body temperature rises too high, the sympathetic nervous system sends a “production order” from the brain to the millions of sweat glands in your body. As the sweat comes to the surface, it cools your skin, reducing body temperature.

Sometimes, your body’s natural cooling system can malfunction, and your brain may signal the sweat glands to produce sweat even when the body’s temperature is not elevated. This can cause excessive sweating. However, most cases of excessive sweating are harmless and are caused by everyday factors, such as:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Excess body weight
  • Stress (job interviews, dating, meetings, public speaking)
  • Medications

Which areas are treated?

Wrinkle treatment type A is used to treat excessive sweating of the underarms, scalp, and face (forehead, nose, and upper lip).

How does the treatments work?

Treatments are administered in our rooms. The procedure involves a series of treatments to the armpits that block the neurotransmitter that stimulates the sweat glands, essentially paralysing them.

Anaesthetic cream is applied and ice packs are also used to minimise discomfort. Then, a starch-iodine test is performed, identifying the sweat pattern precisely for the treatment. The area is then treated by injecting the substance into areas of excessive sweating.

You can return to work immediately. However, it is recommended that you do not use deodorants or engage in strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Medicare may cover some of the treatment for underarms. To see if you can benefit from this rebate, please call us and schedule a consultation.

What to do after the Treatment?

You can return to work immediately. Some swelling and redness are common at the site but will resolve in 24 hours. Bruising is rare but may last 5-7 days. It is recommended that you do not use deodorants or engage in strenuous exercise for 24 hours. This is to allow optimal absorption of the injected substance and to prevent dispersing the substance away from the targeted sweat glands which can diminish its effectiveness.
