It is recommended that you regularly examine your breasts at home. However, if you are over the age of 50, it is advisable to consult your local GP for a referral for an ultrasound and/or a mammogram. While you can have a mammogram, it is a good idea to inform your radiologist before the examination.

If you were able to breastfeed before having augmentation mammoplasty, you should be able to breastfeed after the surgery as well. This is because most breast augmentation mammoplasty techniques are performed through the mammary fold, which usually does not interfere with the milk ducts or nipples. However, after the surgery, you may experience reduced or limited sensation of the nipple for up to 6 months. It is important to note that the extent of this sensation loss may vary from patient to patient.

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices, and you may need to replace them at some point. The general recommendation is to consider a replacement if there are issues such as implant rupture, leakage, capsular contracture (hardening of the scar tissue around the implant), or if you want a change in size or shape. On average, implants might last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, but this can vary widely among individuals.

Although rare, implant ruptures can occur. They can occur due to factors like implant ageing, physical trauma, or during medical procedures. If you suspect a rupture, it’s important to consult with your surgeon for evaluation and potential replacement of the implant.

Patients who request implants that are too large for the breast pocket often develop stretch marks.

Heat can cause swelling and delay the healing process. Therefore, it is not recommended to go sunbathing until at least 6 weeks after undergoing surgery. In addition, beach water or pool water may contain bacteria that can cause an infection when in contact with an open wound. It is advised to refrain from swimming until all wounds are completely healed.

For scar management, consider using products such as Hirudoid cream, zinc cream, Vitamin E cream or oil, silicone scar gel sheeting, and Bio-Oil.
