“Dr Norris, I have a confession to make: I miss my pre-baby breasts!” We hear this often at Form and Face. Women who are otherwise thrilled with being mums are unhappy with the changes pregnancy and breast feeding have made to their breasts, and they feel a little guilty about it.
After all, the changes in a woman’s body have been part of the wonder of creating a new life. That is certainly true, but for many women, the no-longer full and lifted appearance of their post-pregnancy breasts makes them feel self-conscious and unattractive.
There’s no need for that!
At Form and Face, Dr Norris is experienced with the physical and emotional consequences of pregnancy, as well as the benefits that breast implants and breast lifts can offer to mums.
What Happens to a Woman’s Breasts After Pregnancy
Rightly or wrongly, a woman’s breasts are highly associated with her femininity and desirability. Unfortunately, whether or not a woman chooses to breastfeed, pregnancy alone will likely change the size, shape, and position of her breasts, and then change them back again.
The rigors of pregnancy can transform full, buoyant breasts into flat pancakes or what some patients have described as “deflated water balloons,” “tube socks filled with a stack of coins,” and “egg yolks dripping down a wall.” The key factor is genetics.
A woman’s breasts change during and after pregnancy. They usually start increasing in size after the first 8 weeks, with some women gaining as much as one or two cup sizes. After pregnancy (or when breastfeeding is complete), breast size will likely decrease. This decrease can leave the breasts droopy and without volume.
Dr Norris points out that sagging breasts in post-pregnancy women is usually a combination of
- Loss of volume to the breast
- Loss of elasticity in the skin that holds the breast tissue up
Fortunately, while unwelcome changes in a woman’s breast after pregnancy cannot be entirely prevented, they can be corrected.
Breast Help for Supermodel Mums & You, Too
In July of 2015, model Gisele Bundchen donned a burka to sneak into a Parisian plastic surgeon’s office for a little post-pregnancy breastwork. The uber-healthy spokeswoman for natural childbirth and yoga discovered what many mothers before her and since have known:
“The bitter truth is, no matter how many prenatal yoga classes you attend or how much Shea butter balm you apply to your stomach, once you start carrying a baby, your body stops being your own and starts expanding and changing in ways for which you’re not quite prepared.” – Vogue Magazine
