When to Consider Post-Pregnancy Surgery

When to Consider Post-Pregnancy Surgery

There are many things to celebrate about welcoming a child into your life, but this also comes along with changes to the body during and after pregnancy. The body may never go back to its pre-pregnancy appearance.

However, it’s becoming more and more common for post-pregnancy mothers to seek surgical ways to change their breasts or abdominal region. These procedures are collectively called “postpartum surgery” or post-pregnancy surgery.

Liposuction

Hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy and lactation cause women’s bodies to store excess fat, particularly in the abdomen, thighs and buttocks.  During liposuction, excess can be removed.

Please be aware that liposuction is not a weight loss tool. The procedure is most successful when performed on women who are close to their ideal weight and fitness.

Post-Pregnancy Mastopexy

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change the shape of a woman’s breasts. They may gain or lose volume, become stretched, or appear asymmetrical.

Mastopexy surgery, also called a breast lift, can help address these concerns. It can readjust the position of the breasts on the chest, reduce areola size, or reposition low nipples. In some cases, if the patient wants more volume, the procedure can be performed at the same time as breast augmentation mammoplasty using saline or silicone implants.

Abdominoplasty

Women’s midsections are often stretched out by pregnancy, which can affect the skin and underlying muscles. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) can remove excess skin and fat, while addressing the muscles.

Breast surgery and abdominoplasty are often performed at the same time.

Some of Your Hospital Costs May Be Covered

Breast and abdominal surgery done for cosmetic reasons are not normally covered by insurance, but there is an exception when it comes to postpartum surgery. Even if your little one isn’t so little any more, you may still qualify for hospital costs to be covered by your health insurance for up to six years after giving birth. This, however, depends on whether you require surgery for medical reasons and meet other criteria, as well as the type of insurance you have.

If postpartum surgery is of interest to you, we hope you will contact our office for a no-obligation consultation. We can discuss the various options available and help you navigate any questions you have about post-pregnancy cosmetic procedures.
