Labioplasty – A Very Personal Best

Labioplasty – A Very Personal Best

Cosmetic plastic surgery is a very personal decision. Every woman has a unique reason for choosing to alter her appearance. Labioplasty, the recontouring of skin surrounding a woman’s vulva, is perhaps the most personal decision of all.

As a surgeon, I give the procedure known as labioplasty a big thumbs up. But when it comes to cosmetic labioplasty for my patients in Bondi Junction, I am a bit less enthusiastic. In this post, I’d like to explain my point of view.

Medical Reasons for Labioplasty

Many women choose labioplasty to alleviate physical discomfort. Common medical complaints that suggest labioplasty is warranted include:

  • Large labia majora
  • Protrusive or exposed labia minora
  • Discomfort during sexual activity
  • Hygiene difficulties

The Birth of the Designer Labia

The 21st Century has brought with it a trend towards female full frontal nudity in the media. Carefully attended to by the make-up department and delicately lit by the production crew, these perfect female genitals have distorted both men’s and women’s sense of what constitutes a normal appearance. As a result, women feel more uncomfortable with genitalia that they believe deviates from a normal or attractive appearance.

Australia is now filled with women who think that labioplasty will make them look hot and desirable in form-fitting clothes that show off their most private parts. Some common aesthetic concerns include:

  • Asymmetrical labia
  • Too-large labia
  • Discomfort with appearance of labial area in tight-fitting clothes
  • Self-consciousness about appearance of labia in the nude

The most painful story I hear from patients seeking this procedure is that sexual partners or other women have told them that their genitals are abnormal or unattractive. This is both hurtful and pure nonsense, yet an increasing number of women seek to modify their labia not because they want to, but because they think they should.

Labioplasty Is a Maybe, Not a Must

As I wrote at the beginning of this post, I don’t generally recommend that my patients have a strictly cosmetic labioplasty at Form & Face in Bondi Junction. My business is physical enhancement, but I don’t subscribe to a universal law that defines what is and isn’t beautiful.

I believe that each of us has our own personal best. Women come in all sorts of wonderful, amazing, and lovely sizes. As they age, their bodies shift. This is absolutely normal, and a woman who is content with how her body looks or feels need never consider any type of cosmetic enhancement.

Is cosmetic labioplasty right for you? That’s a decision that can only be made in consultation with your surgeon. If you live in the Eastern Suburbs area, I hope you will book that consultation with me at Form and Face.
