Despite all the advancements in cosmetic surgery over the years, many of my male patients at Form and Face in Bondi Junction are self-conscious about male breast reduction surgery. Happily that self-consciousness turns to increased self-esteem when they experience the results of this procedure.
Winter presents an outstanding opportunity for cosmetic treatments like male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) that many men would prefer to keep under their hats. Let me explain why.
Male Breast Reduction Is NOT Just a Weight Issue
Many men are embarrassed about enlarged breasts because they think their excess tissue is the result of obesity. Weight can trigger this condition, it’s true. However, men, like women, can have an abnormal growth of glandular breast tissue, usually due to a hormone imbalance.
Other causes of enlarged male breasts include:
- Dramatic weight loss
- A problem inherited at birth (congenital)
- Diseases such as liver failure and cancer
- Anabolic steroid use
- Alcohol and/or drug abuse
Gynaecomastia – We’ll Never Tell
A common theme among my patients seeking male breast reduction surgery is “Will everyone know?” Male patients who undergo this procedure will need to wear a compression garment for a few weeks as part of their recovery process. This can be tough to disguise in the abs-baring summer months.
When the procedure is done in winter, however, the compression garment is easily hidden under heavier winter clothes.
Post-Gynaecomastia: Wait on the Weights
A man’s best friend is his workout, and many of my patients are extremely concerned about how quickly they can resume their workout regimen after male breast reduction surgery. They are understandably eager to get back to the gym, but I caution them not to get back to a full workout too soon.
- Aerobic exercise – Aerobic activity is good for the recovery process since it helps your circulation. Therefore, you can begin walking and running straight away.
- Lower body weight training – I recommend that you start lower body weight training at two weeks post-surgery.
- Upper body weight training – I recommend that you resume this portion of your training six weeks post-surgery.
Is Winter the right time for your male breast reduction? It would be a pleasure to meet you and discuss this procedure at Form and Face.
