How to Reduce Breast Implant Swelling & Minimise Bruising

How to Reduce Breast Implant Swelling & Minimise Bruising

“What can I expect after breast augmentation surgery, Dr Norris?” It’s an FAQ Form and Face, and one we’re happy to answer for our patients…and for you.

Do You Have to Suffer for Beauty?

Breast implant surgery is an invasive procedure. Despite tremendous advancements in techniques and tools, most women who have this surgery will experience some degree of

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Numbness
  • Discomfort

“Fortunately, there are a number of easy things patients can do at home to accelerate their recovery, particularly with regards to swelling and bruising,” reports Dr Norris.

Ice Is Nice

A cold compress is your best defence against swelling and bruising. Dr Norris recommends that patients ice their breasts a few times throughout the first day or so, keeping the ice pack on for 40 minutes and off for 20. “Don’t let the compress come in direct contact with your skin,” cautions the doctor. “Your skin will be quite sensitive, and you don’t want to give yourself the equivalent of freezer burn.”

Turn Down the Heat

The thought of a long, hot shower or a nice, steamy soak in your tub may be appealing after breast surgery, but you’re going to keep that thought in your head…at least for a few weeks. “Patients can generally shower within 48 hours, but I remind them to keep the water tepid, not hot,” says Dr Norris.

Elevate Your Status

“Good circulation promotes faster, better healing even when you’re asleep,” advises Dr Norris. To keep the blood flowing, he has patients sleep in an elevated, inclined position. “The angle shouldn’t be severe,” he says. “Somewhere between 25 and 45 degrees is optimal.” Some companies manufacture post-surgical wedge pillows designed specifically for breast surgery recovery.

Get a Working Bra

A medical compression bra is one of the great wonders of breast implant recovery. Its snug fit provides much-needed support and keeps implants positioned correctly during the initial healing period. “A compression bra also increases circulation which, in turn, minimises swelling and bruising,” says Dr Norris. Patients wear compression bras for at least a week following surgery. “Don’t go back to regular bras too soon,” he cautions. “Traditional bras can hinder healing and something like an underwire bra can irritate the incision site.”
