We’re ringing in the New Year early here at Form and Face with a look at the top cosmetic surgery procedures for millennials. Why has this demographic caught our attention? Millennials are moving ahead of Baby Boomers, not only in numbers, but in their enthusiasm for aesthetic enhancement. According to RealSelf:
“Compared to older generations, people under the age of 35 aren’t as weirded out by the thought of using medicine to change their bodies. That said, they don’t want those changes to be overly noticeable. Baywatch bodies and Barbie smiles are out. Smaller breasts and incremental progress are in.”
Teens and young adults who are maturing into twenty- and thirty-somethings look at cosmetic surgery a bit differently than Baby Boomers did at the same age. “Baby boomers often delayed cosmetic surgery until their fifties and sixties,” says our practice founder, plastic surgeon Dr Benjamin Norris. “Their goal was to repair visible signs of ageing on the face and body.”
Millennials, on the other hand, think of cosmetic surgery as a preventive measure that may help them avoid other, more invasive procedures further down the line. They also turn to treatments such as dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections to delay a facelift.
Millennials Most-Searched Cosmetic Surgeries
One characteristic common to millennials is their enthusiasm for Internet research. A RealSelf survey in 2015 provided a snapshot of millennial readers’ top options for cosmetic surgery. Their findings were based on who visited the site to search online content regarding:
- Brazilian Butt Lift (53%)
- Treatment for Stretch Marks (51%)
- Tattoo Removal (48%)
- Rhinoplasty (48%)
- Treatment for Acne Scars (46%)
The impact of stars who “bare all” regarding their physical modifications has helped cosmetic enhancement step out of the shadows and onto the red carpet. Earlier this year, The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery surveyed its membership, and 82% of surgeons said they felt celebrity culture was the primary driver for younger patients.
“The teen and young adult years are a highly impressionable time, and the more consumers are inundated with celebrity images via social media, the more they want to replicate the enhanced, retouched images that are passed off as reality,” – Edwin Williams III, president, AAFPRS
Prediction: 5 Top Cosmetic Procedures for Millennials
What does that mean for the future? Recently, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) published its predictions for trends in 2017. Next year, the list toppers are likely to be:
- Breast Augmentation
- Liposuction
- Nose Job
- Breast Reduction for Women
- Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
