Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most in-demand cosmetic procedures for women at Form and Face. “Implant surgery should help a woman feel good about her body, in and out of clothes,” says Dr Benjamin Norris. “Skilfully chosen breast implants will make a woman look and feel naturally beautiful, not surgically enhanced.”
How do you choose the right implant? Good question. Gone are of the days when implant sizes were limited to small, medium, large, and OMG. Today, there are literally hundreds of models on the market, with different sizes, shapes, and other attributes. What’s a patient to do?
Talk to your surgeon.
“The first and most important step in breast implant surgery is to get the size right,” says Dr Norris. He warns patients against any practitioner who says, “I’ll give you whatever you want” regarding breast implants. “Choosing the right size implant is more than simply an aesthetic consideration,” Dr Norris reminds patients. “If an implant is too large for a person’s frame, it can lead to a complication known as capsular contracture which makes breasts look misshapen and feel hard.”
Be Yourself, Not Emily
“I want breasts like Emily Scott,” one patient announced during a recent consultation. “Her breasts are perfect.” Yes, they are…on Emily. Emily is a statuesque 175cm whose tall frame is complemented by her 34D-24-34 curves. The patient who wanted Emily’s ideal breasts for herself stood just 154 centimetres.
“Selecting an implant that would give the patient a 34D cup size would have made her look top-heavy and unnatural,” says Dr Norris. “A woman should select an implant that is in harmony with her natural anatomy and body frame.” As a general rule, for implants to be noticeable, but natural:
- Taller/Full Figured Women – choose larger implants with greater projection
- Shorter/Petite Women – choose smaller implants with less projection
Sizing You Up for Breast Implant Perfection
Patients can opt for round or teardrop implant shapes in various projections, but it is the size of the implants that goes a long way towards the end result. (So does the skill of the plastic surgeon who is advising you on your choice!) During your preliminary consultation, Dr Norris will talk with you about your aesthetic goals and how you want to look after surgery. He will show you some before-and-after pictures of previous patients as a guide.
When Dr Norris knows what’s in your mind, he’ll move on to your breasts to measure:
- How broad your chest is
- The width at the base of your breasts
- The distance between your breasts
- The amount of natural breast tissue you have
- The firmness of laxity of your breast skin
